ABSTRACT

The present classroom action research was administered to improve classroom behaviors in teaching and learning process in reading comprehension by implementing 3H (here, hidden, and in my head) strategy through think pair and share, to improve the students’ achievement in reading comprehension, and to know the students’ perception toward the implementation of 3H strategy in reading comprehension.

The participants of the research were the students of Grade XI IPA1 of “MAN 1 Pontianak” in Academic Year of 2013/2014. The classroom action research was conducted in three cycles. Observation checklists, field notes, recording, rating scale, focus group interview, and test were used as the research instruments.

Based on the collected qualitative and quantitative data, the research found significant improvements of the students’ behaviors in the implementation of the 3H strategy through think pair and share in reading comprehension class.
The improvements of the students’ achievement were determined by analyzing the result of the students’ pair work, and the individual post test. The improvements both in pair work and in individual post test was significant. At the third cycle, all students passed the determined minimum standard score.

The focus group interview and rating scale were used to know the students’ perception about the implementation of the 3H strategy through think pair and share in reading comprehension class. Based on the result of the focus group interview, and the rating scale the students stated that the implementation of the strategy helped them to comprehend the reading texts. It facilitated them to check the correctness of their answers. It also made the learning more enjoyable. The students could share ideas and help each other to comprehend the reading texts.

In conclusion, during the implementation of the 3H strategy through think pair and share in reading comprehension class the students’ classroom behaviors were improved significantly. The significant improvements also occurred to the students’ achievements. Based on the focus group interview and the rating scale the students stated that the implementation of the strategy improved their reading comprehension.

It was recommended that the teacher should facilitate the students effectively in implementing the strategy. The students should apply this strategy to improve their reading comprehension. Other researchers may apply the strategy to various students’ level by adjusting the reading texts and the difficulties accordingly.
