Standards for Seminar of Research Design

What are the requirements? A student can register for a seminar on research design (as a part of writing a thesis) when s/he has completed all courses in Semester I and Semester II, presented in/attended overseas and domestic conference related to language teaching, paid all required fees, attended at least three student seminars of research design (except the first three students/proposer), and had his/her draft of research design approved by supervisors and head of the study program. The study program issue a letter of invitation to supervisors and examiners not more a week after the registration. The seminar can be conducted not more than two weeks after the registration.

How is it conducted? Every student seminar of research design is attended by a proposer student, two supervisors, two examiners (if possible, one of them is external examiner). The seminar is open for all students to attend. Two administrative staffs are available to prepare a room and all required facilities. The seminar should last not more than two hours. There are four sessions in every seminar on research design: (1) student’s (proposer’s) presentation; (2) discussion between the two examiners and the proposer; (3) panel discussion between the examiners and the supervisors; and (4) announcement of the result of the seminar. The chair of the seminar (Supervisor I) may open a discussion between the students attending the seminar and the proposer.

What are the possible results? There are four possible decisions about the seminar that should be made by the chair of the seminar (Supervisor I) based on the result of a panel discussion between the supervisors and the examiners, namely: (1) the proposal in accepted without revision; (2) the proposal is accepted with minor revision; (3) the proposal is accepted with medium revision; (4) the proposal is accepted with major revision; and (4) the proposal is NOT accepted. If a proposal is accepted without revision, the proposer will receive the score of his/her proposal and performance right after the announcement (in the seminar). If a proposal is accepted the proposer will receive his/her score of seminar after s/he submit the revised proposal. If a proposal is NOT accepted, the proposer will not get any score and s/he should register for another seminar with different proposal.

How is it documented? Every student seminar of research design should be well documented and reported to the Dean of Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan. The document at least consists of the student’s proposal, the examiners’ suggestions for revision, the examiners’ and supervisors’ scores and the recapitulation, and (if possible) a photograph of the seminar situation.
