Sudarsono

Sudarsono was born on 14 April 1958 in Banjarnegara, Central Java. He obtained his undergraduate degree “Doktorandus” in English Language Education from IKIP Yogyakarta (1985) with a scholarship from the Government of Indonesia, and Masters of Arts in Applied Linguistics (1994) as well as PhD in Linguistics (2004) both from La Trobe University with AIDAB and ADS scholarship, Australia. His theses are respectively entitled A Contrastive Study on Indonesian and English Adverbs, Codeswitching on the Speech of Javanese-Indonesian Educated Bilinguals, and Description of Bakatik Dayak Language.

His main interest is linguistics-related, that is,  theoretical linguistics, grammar, sociolinguistics, bilingualism, psycholinguistics, and language acquisition. His studies that were already presented in national and international seminars and or published in journals or book chapters include Plausible Influence of Sinitic Languages on Bakatik Dayak Language (2013) International Colloqium – Samarahan, Bandhekan and Banyumasan Dialects of Javanese: Mirrored by Bagong and Bawor  and Banyumasan and Sundanese: Linguistic Study  at the Border of Central Java and West Java Internasional Seminar – Pontianak (2012), I am writing a letter: How come? International Conference – Pontianak (2012), Voice Changing: Translating strategy to generate the naturalness in Indonesian texts Internasional Conference – Syah Alam (2011), Minority Language Maintenance of Javanese in Selangor Internasional Conference – Kuching (2010), Study on language names: Case of Bakatik, adjacent language to Malay in Northwestern Borneo Journal of Malay (2010), and Coverage ad Meaningfulness: the present challenge of Linguistics Education Seminar Sebahtera – Kuala Lumpur (2010).

The textbooks already published include Sound System of Bakatik (in press, APM Universiti Malaya), Syntax of Bakatik Dayak Language: Clauses and Sentences (2013, APM Universiti Malaya), and Steps of Success in Learning English: supplemented with special chapter about strategy and examples of National Examination test items for junior high schools (2008, Ministry of Religion Affairs, The Republic of Indonesia).

In addition, as a lecturer since 1987, in Tanjungpura University Sudarsono chaired/ founded University Language Center (1994-1999), chaired University Quality Assurance (2007-2008), and is now chairing Masters Study Program of English Language Education (2012-now). He also experienced working for Academy of Malay Study, University of Malaya (2009-2011) as a visiting senior lecturer, for SABCON (Swedish Skanska-ASEA and British Balfour Beatty Consortium) as translator/ interpreter of  English-Indonesian-Javanese and vice versa (1985-1987), and for UNHCR as English instructor to Indochinese refugees in Galang Island, Indonesia (1983-1984).

Positions in professional organizations include Vice President of English Language Teaching Materials Association (ELTeaM) (2012–now), Chair of Indonesia English Teachers Association (IETA) West Kalimantan Chapter (2008-now), and Chair of School textbooks Writers Association, West Kalimantan (2004-now).
