ABSTRACT
This study is conducted to develop Hot Potatoes-Based Materials for teaching and learning English at SMK Negeri 1 Balai. This study adopts research and development study, which provides systematic procedures for developing an educational product. ADDIE procedures are analysis, design, develop, implement and evaluation. The procedures of development in this study can be described as follows: The first step was to analyze students’ needs, the task, and the topic of the lesson on SMK curriculum. The purpose of this step was to collect students’ need description of developing English materials of SMK Negeri 1 Balai. The result of students’ need analysis showed that they needed multimedia-based materials that they can use it in or out the classroom. They also needed to have interactive activities, like quiz in their learning activities. The second step was designing Hot potatoes-based materials. In this stage, the objectives of the lessons, the types of the activities and the layout or display were set. The third step was developing stage; the storyboard, the feedback of the activities, the instructions, and the objectives of learning units of hot potatoes-based materials were also created in this stage. The fourth step was the implementation stage. This was to collect the students’ response on the product. The result of this implementation was to collect the students’ response on the product. The response can be used as the information whether the product is useable or not. The result of the students’ responds was 80 % respondents positively respond that hot potatoes- based materials were useable. The fifth step is evaluation. This stage involved three experts; those are material-media experts and language expert. They evaluated that Hot potatoes-based materials are useable. Fran safer was born on sep 12,1983. He is a civil servant in kabupaten sanggau. Currently he teaches english at Smk negeri 1 balai.
